Early in the season, the bags will be smaller and contain a variety of about 4 to 6 different vegetables. As the season progresses, the bags will have about 8 to12 different types of vegetables. Our CSA bags have enough vegetables to feed a family of 3-5 people. The most common feedback is that there is too much for smaller families.
We have pickup locations in Hillsboro, Whitney, and Laguna Park and spend one hour at each location. As we get closer to the season, we announce the times for each location. For Spring/Summer, the pickups will be on Sundays at the start of the season and then transition to Saturdays starting in early June, as farmer Rachel is also a teacher. The first Sunday pickups will always begin at 1 pm so that we can respect the time of those who attend church service.
No. Sharing in risks and rewards is the beauty of having a CSA membership. During bountiful seasons, you will get more than you paid for – in most cases, a lot more! However, conditions like drought, weather, hail, pests, and other acts of God may cause conditions beyond our control where you may get less than what you paid for. While we have had failures of certain crops, in our six CSA seasons, no one has ever complained that they didn’t get enough – in fact, our most heard complaint is that they get too much!
While we are not certified organic, we follow organic practices and do not use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Every amendment, fertilizer, and pest control product is organic and organically certified. The USDA has a monopoly on using the word organic when advertising organically raised produce as organic if you aren’t certified. What a word salad that is! BTW – have you tried our salad mix? It is world-ish famous 😊
Yes, but with a caveat – we often do not have any additional items to swap for early in the season. As all our main crops start coming in, this changes quickly, and when we have extra, you can swap up to 2 items per week.
We will hold your bag through Wednesday of the following week for you to pick it up at the farm. You can also send a friend, relative, or neighbor to pick it up.
We post the day before each delivery in our private Facebook group what everyone will be getting. We also take a photo of each CSA bag and share it on our public Facebook page weekly.
Once you fill out the form on our CSA signup page, we will send an invoice via email. You can pay securely directly through that email. We also accept cash, check, Venmo, and PayPal payments, so let us know!
Unfortunately, not. Once we receive payment, you have secured your place in the CSA for the respective season. There are no refunds, either total or partial. However, you can find an alternate person to buy out the rest of your season’s shares and ask for a prorated payment from them to take over your share.
Yes! However, we try to reach people via several different methods, and even after all that outreach, it is not uncommon for people to either miss the messages or not get a notification. As the season approaches kick-off, we are very active on our private members-only Facebook group. We will alert our members there on Facebook, via email, and text. Still, you are responsible for contacting the farm if you know the season is approaching and have not received a notification.
Our private members-only Facebook page is where we do most of our updates for our customers. We do send out emails before the season starts, and we also send out weekly text messages to members to remind them of pickup days and times. Also, if there are any changes to pickup days or any other out-of-the-ordinary changes, we will email all our members. If you need to reach us, the best methods of communication are - Text, Email, Phone Call, or Facebook message in that order. We will provide each member with our direct cell phone numbers in our Facebook private members group, and you can email us at info@pappyjackfarms.com
No. We have run the numbers, and the only way we could be successful is if we raised pricing to the point that it would ruin the main reason why people participate in a CSA – to lock in lower pricing for fresh and locally grown vegetables. Our main objective is to provide value, and the price we would have to charge goes against that objective. We encourage smaller families to partner with neighbors and friends to split the costs of a CSA and share each week’s bounty between them. However, we plan to offer two-week trial memberships for about half of the CSA season when we have more than enough for our members.
While we have wholesale customers and other outlets for selling our veggies, our commitment to our CSA Members is that you will get the best and freshest vegetables we offer each week – most of which are picked the day before they are bagged and ready for pickup. The only time we offer any vegetables to our other customers is if it was grown specifically for them, there wasn’t enough volume to offer to each of our members, or when we have excess veggies. Our CSA members come first in every aspect of our operation.
Members often share recipes in our private Facebook group, and one of our main goals for future CSAs is to include a description of vegetables that you might not be familiar with (turnips, for instance) and have a recipe of the week that we can print and include inside your bag.
More than likely – Yes. You may find veggies in your box that you never get to or may not like, and as a result, they may get thrown out. While we know that you might feel guilty about this, we encourage you to expect that, no matter how great you are at eating vegetables, you will almost certainly throw out some; it’s unavoidable.
